Opportunities are everywhere! This phrase builds upon our current motto of “Challenging All To Succeed”, which embodies all that
Duluth has represented over the years. I believe that in order to find success, we must first know what opportunities are available and how to take advantage of them.
In my last communication, I stated that we were changing our structure at
Duluth
High school in order to offer more support to all students, especially those who were not able to get help before or after school. Since the change has been made, students have been given a longer lunch period two days per week, a mandatory tutoring group was formed for those students who were unsuccessful in multiple classes, and opportunities have been developed for those students who need extra help from their teachers.
After six weeks of this new structure, we have seen many successes that have resulted in higher achievement as well as a greater sense of pride. From the beginning of the mandatory tutoring program in November to the end of the first semester, over 45% of the students involved improved their grades to a level where they no longer were required to attend the sessions. The end result of the hard work of our teachers involved in this program were two-fold; first of all, more students were passing more classes, and secondly the students saw that they could do the work if the simply believed in themselves and took advantage of the resources available to them.
With all of this being said, I believe that we would all agree that opportunities are everywhere. We encourage all of our students to take advantage of the greatest resource we have at Duluth, and what sets us apart from many other schools; our faculty. All of our teachers have hours posted for students to come and get extra help as well as opportunities that may be available during the extended lunches.
We appreciate all of your continued support as we move towards our goal of becoming the best school we can be.
Sincerely,
Jason Lane
Principal,
